Pick the occasion, choose a tone and copy a message that sounds like you. Every one of the 184 messages was written for this site, and you can add names and a sign-off as you copy.

### Birthday

- Happy birthday! I hope this year brings you as much joy as you bring everyone lucky enough to know you.
  Warm
- Wishing you a birthday full of the people and things you love most, and a year ahead that's even better than the last.
  Warm
- Another year of you is something worth celebrating. Thank you for being exactly who you are. Have the loveliest day.
  Warm
- Happy birthday to someone who makes ordinary days feel like occasions. I hope today returns the favour.
  Warm
- Happy birthday! Don't think of it as getting older. Think of it as becoming a collector's edition.
  Funny
- They say age is just a number. In your case it's a fairly big number, but still just a number. Happy birthday!
  Funny
- I wanted to get you something you've always wanted, but the shop was fresh out of extra hours in the day. Happy birthday!
  Funny
- Cake today, regrets tomorrow. That's the birthday rule, and I expect you to follow it to the crumb.
  Funny
- Warmest wishes on your birthday. May the year ahead bring good health, happiness and continued success.
  Formal
- Wishing you a very happy birthday and every good thing in the year to come.
  Formal
- With best wishes for a wonderful birthday from all of us on the team.
  Formal
- Happy birthday! Have a brilliant day.
  Short
- Here's to you, today and every day.
  Short
- Cake, candles and all the best. Happy birthday!

## How to use the message ideas

Choose an occasion, then narrow it down by tone: **warm** for close friends and family, **funny** for people who share your sense of humour, **formal** for colleagues, clients and people you know less well, and **short** when the card has little room or you plan to add a line of your own. Search looks through every message, so try a word such as "team", "proud" or "cake".

Copy puts the message on your clipboard. Open *Add names and a sign-off* to have "Dear Sam," and your sign-off and name added around it. Those names stay in your browser's local storage on this device only.

## Making a message your own

A borrowed sentence works best as a starting point. Add one specific detail: a shared memory, the name of the new baby, the thing you will miss about a colleague. For sympathy cards, simple and sincere is kinder than clever, which is why there are no jokes in that section; naming the person who died and offering one concrete kind of help (a meal, a lift, a walk) means a great deal. If you need a thank-you note rather than a one-liner, the [thank-you note builder](https://littlewildnote.cyou/thank-you-note/) writes a full note from a few details.

## More from the writing desk

Once your words are ready, these help you get them onto paper and into the post.

- [Thank-you note builder](https://littlewildnote.cyou/thank-you-note/): Fill in a few details and get a natural thank-you note, in several versions.
- [Envelope address printer](https://littlewildnote.cyou/envelope-printer/): Print addresses straight onto #10, A7, A2, DL, C5, C6 or custom envelopes.
- [Postcard printer](https://littlewildnote.cyou/postcard-printer/): Your photo on the front, a message and address lines on the back.

Two free tools from elsewhere for the online side of sending cards.

### Group cards without the newsletters

Online group-card and e-card sites often want an email address before you can sign or send. CleanTempMail gives you a free temporary inbox in one click, with no account, and deletes everything after three days, so the sign-up never turns into a stream of promotions.

### An e-card you weren't expecting?

"Someone sent you a card" emails are a favourite disguise for scams. WebTraceCheck opens a link in a disposable cloud browser on an isolated desktop that is deleted when you finish, so a doubtful page never runs on your own device.

## Questions

**Can I use these messages in cards I sell or publish?**

They are here for your own cards and notes. Use them freely in cards you send; for anything you plan to publish or sell, please write your own wording.

**What should I write in a sympathy card?**

Keep it short and honest: say you are sorry, share a memory if you have one, and offer specific help. Avoid explaining the loss or saying you know how they feel.

**How do I sign a card from a couple or family?**

List the names, usually with the person closest to the recipient first: "Love, Ana and Leo". Type them in the From field and they are added when you copy.
